Non Shedding Dogs
Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds
A very relaxed Basenji
Non shedding dogs are said to be hypoallergenic breeds because they are low dander dogs and lose less or no hair which tends to carry the dander in the air and onto clothing. Non shedding dog breeds distribute less dander in the room. What?
“Hypo” means “fewer” or “less” of something. Thus, “hypo-allergenic” means something that causes less or fewer allergic reactions.
Most dogs have an undercoat. Dander is a tiny flaking of dry skin produced by the dog. It is released into the air along with hair (shedding) from most dog breeds and triggers the allergic reaction in people. Non shedding (hypoallergenic dog breeds) don’t do this, or do it very little and not enough to bother a human nose.
Below is a list of low and non-shedding dogs that seem to produce less dander. These are hypoallergenic dog breeds, or, low dander dogs. While all dogs produce some dander, these are more likely to be safe for dog dander allergy sufferers.
Before adopting one, it’s a good practice to enter the facility housing the dog in question and spend a little time around the dog to see if you feel any aggravation from the exposure to the area or the dog present there. It’s a good test to spend time around presumed non-shedding dogs before adopting one.
