Designer Dogs a.k.a. Hybrid Dogs

Designer dogs have odd names like the lively little “Cavachon” which is simply a mixture of the purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the purebred Bichon Frise. This is not a breed, but rather, a “hybrid dog.”

Don’t confuse “mixed breed” or “mongrel” or “mutt” with these Hybrid Dogs. True, these are all crossbreed dogs. However, designer or hybrid dogs are the offspring of true purebreds and crossbreeds can be a mix of anything, pure or not.

Mixed breeds, mongrels and mutts are usually dogs with no clearly identifiable parental breeds. In cases where the parental breeds ARE known, the background and lineage of the parents remains unknown.

The “hybrid or “designer dog” comes from parents that are themselves purebred canines.

Want a healthy, long lived pet? There are two schools of thought on mixing breeds. One thought is that the two different breeds, when combined, will minimize the defects in each of the dogs’ genes, thereby producing a healthier dog with a longer average lifespan.

The other thought is that both parents carry inherited gene defects and similar gene defects will be passed down to the next generation where the defects can become dominant.

My OWN experience has been in favor of the first scenario. My mix breed and hybrid dogs have been generally very healthy and long lived. I’ve had around 25 mixed breed dogs over the years. I currently have one mixed breed and one pedigree. The pedigree has diabetes and pancreatic problems.

The Cavachon

Here’s a starter list of Designer Dogs. 2010:

Australian Labradoodle – A mix of Labrador Retriever, Poodle, Cocker Spaniels and the Irish Water Spaniel.

Cavachon — Cavalier King Charles and Bichon Frise.

Chesador — Chesapeake Bay Retriever / Labrador Retriever.

Cockalier — Cocker Spaniel / Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Cockapoo — — Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix.

Doxiepoo — Dachshund / Poodle.

Frenchie Pug — French Bulldog / Pug.

Goldendoodle — Golden Retriever / Poodle.

Labradoodle, American — Labrador Retriever / Poodle.

Malshi — Maltese and Shih Tzu.

Puggle – Pug and the Beagle mix.

Schnoodle – Schnauzer and Poodle.

Whoodle — Wheaten Terrier and the Poodle.

Yorktese — Yorkshire Terrier and Maltese.
